If you have been considering breast implants in New York, you may be presented with two options: silicone or saline filled implants. Both implants have their own set of pros and cons.  Which implant you choose largely depends on several factors such as your existing body frame, current size of breast tissue, surgical goals, and preferences. This quick guide will talk about your silicone implant options in Manhattan and nearby areas with Dr. Steven Wallach.

SILICONE VS. SALINE IMPLANTS

By and large, silicone implants are softer and smoother than their saline counterparts. Majority of women nowadays consider using silicone implants because it provides for a more natural feel with its semi solid gel consistency. Also, it has been found out that silicone implants are less likely to ripple than saline implants.

FDA-APPROVED SILICONE IMPLANTS

Currently, there are 5 silicone implants approved by the FDA that you can choose from:

1. Allergan’s Natrelle Silicone-Filled Breast Implants (approved in November 2006)

–  It comes either with textured or smooth shells and is approved for breast augmentation in women 22 years or older and breast reconstruction in women of all ages. This type of implant has also been used in revision surgeries.

2. Mentor’s MemoryGel Silicone-Filled Breast Implants (approved in November 2006)

 – It also comes in different sizes, either with textured or smooth shells. It is approved for breast augmentation in women 22 years or older and breast reconstruction in women of all ages. This type of implant has also been used in revision surgeries.

3. Sientra’s Silicone Gel Breast Implants (approved in March 2012)

– Sientra’s silicone gel implants are quite similar to the structure of the previously mentioned implants. They have also been used in breast augmentation and reconstruction.

4. Allergan’s Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Breast Implants (approved in February 2013)

– These implants offer the advantage of more cross-linking than Allergan’s earlier versions of silicone implant. The greater the cross-linking bonds, the firmer the silicone gel in the implant. Like its earlier counterparts, these implants are used for breast augmentation, reconstruction, and revision surgeries.

5. Mentor MemoryShape Silicone-Filled Breast Implants (approved in June 2013)

– These implants offer the advantage of more cross-linking than Natrelle’s earlier versions of silicone implant. The greater the cross-linking bonds, the firmer the silicone gel in the implant.  These implants are used for breast augmentation, reconstruction, and revision surgeries.
