Do I need a tummy tuck or can I just have liposuction?
There are many patients, specifically women, who come in after having children, wanting to have their body back to what it was before they had children, and they say, “Can I just have liposuction? Would that be okay?” In some instances, that is a yes. In some instances, that is a no.
It really depends upon how loose their abdominal skin is, how weak their musculature is underneath, and what the fatty layer content is between their skin and their muscle layers. If the skin is really good quality, and the muscles are in pretty good shape, then yes, maybe liposuction is the answer for them. But in patients that have weak musculature, a protuberant abdomen, a moderate amount of fatty tissue in the skin of the area below their umbilicus, then they’re probably better off having a tummy tuck. Sometimes I do both, but usually I will stage it, if I have to do liposuction of the upper abdominal flap as well.
