BOTOX® and Dysport are derived from Botulinum Toxin A and are used in an extremely diluted form that acts locally on the injected muscles. They treat facial lines of animation; in other words, they deactivate some muscle function that can cause facial wrinkles. BOTOX®/Dysport do not require skin testing, and injection of these neuromodulators is one of the most common aesthetic procedures performed today. They treat “laugh lines”, or “crow’s feet” around the eyes. They also work well on the forehead to soften transverse lines, and vertical lines or “furrows” between the eyebrows. These vertical lines are sometimes referred to as “11” lines. By treating the tail of the lateral eyebrow, they can raise the lateral brow. Some physicians have even injected BOTOX® or Dysport into lines around the mouth to eliminate “smoker’s lines.” They have been used to raise the nasal tip, eliminate chin dimpling, and improve neck bands. They can also be used to soften the so-called “bunny lines” around the nose. It can also be used for the treatment of excessive sweating and for many cases of migraine headaches. The effect usually lasts about four months, and sometimes longer. There may be some minor bruising and swelling of the treated regions that will often resolve anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
