After massive weight loss patients have reached their goal weight, often the upper body has loose hanging skin and soft tissue. Even though many of these patients undergo lower body lifts, breast/chest, and arm surgery to remove the excess redundant skin and tissue, there is commonly alot of laxity in the upper back and lateral posterior chest that are not adequately treated. For women, this is commonly the tissue around their bra straps which can extend in several upper back and mid back rolls. Men have a similar issues with the back rolls as well. Excision of this excess tissue can be performed using an Upper Body Lift (UBL).
As an expert in the field of plastic surgery, one of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been listening to my patients stories about how having plastic surgery has changed their lives.”
Surgical Technique For Upper Body Lift
The goal of the UBL is to remove the excess soft tissue and skin of the upper back including the lateral upper and mid back rolls. The incision pattern is often designed for women to hide the resulting scar in the bra line as best as possible. For men it is in a similar location as for women. The incision is often extended into the lateral chest along the lower lateral chest crease or in the previously treated incision pattern used for a breast reduction or gynecomastia surgery. The procedure takes 2-3 hours and patients need 1-2 weeks to recuperate.
