The 37-year old Angelina Jolie revealed last May in an op-ed article in the New York Times that she had a preventive mastectomy last February which was followed by breast reconstruction via breast implants in April. The decision was made by Jolie after finding out that she had an 87 percent risk of having breast cancer and 50 percent of having ovarian cancer at the same time. Dr. Steven Wallach, a Manhattan breast reconstruction surgeon, wrote about his thoughts about her decision here.
Teardrop Shaped Implants
Another recent article published by NBC News provided the details of Jolie’s preventive mastectomy and breast reconstruction. It turns out that the implants used for her breast reconstruction were the teardrop-shaped ones.
“On April 27, doctors did her reconstruction, using a newer teardrop-shaped implant plus sheets of cadaver skin, which “creates like a sling under the implant” to give a more natural look,” Jolie’s primary caregiver Dr. Kristi Funk said.
Angelina Jolie’s 3 Phases of Breast Surgery
It is interesting to note that all 3 phases of the surgery were done through creases in her breasts, to minimize the appearance of incision scars. The first phase involved saving her nipples which was successfully done. Later on, the second phase involved removing her breast tissues and replacing it with tissue expanders. Lastly, nine weeks later, the teardrop-shaped implants were put in place.
