About
Gynecomastia is the development of excessive glandular tissue or fat in the chest area. It can also be a combination of both excessive tissue and fat. The condition can affect one or both breasts. The procedure helps restore a firmer and flatter chest.
Before getting the gynecomastia surgery, it is important that the surgeon checks to confirm if there is an underlying medical reason for the condition. Some of the causes of the surgery include hereditary conditions, hormonal changes, disease, or side effects of some drugs.

Recovery
Your gynecomastia surgery will be performed on an outpatient basis and under general anesthesia. Depending on the severity of your condition, there are different methods that can be used for your surgery.

Dr. Wallach can use liposuction for the removal of excess fatty tissue. It may take about 2 hours for your gynecomastia surgery and can be performed under local or general anesthesia. For some time after your surgery, you will have to wear a special compression garment that will keep the swelling down and support your new chest contours.
Your recovery from the procedure will depend on the kind of procedure performed. The downtime of the procedure is only about a week, a major benefit is your results are permanent. However, you will have to be careful about gaining weight in the future which could cause excessive fat deposit in the chest area again.
Swelling and bruising from the procedure is normal. You will be instructed to wear a compression garment until you recover. This helps to reduce the swelling and helps your skin to adhere to the new shape. Dr. Wallach will prescribe medication to relieve any discomfort or pain that you may experience for the first few days after the surgery.
You should avoid any exercise or strenuous activity until your incisions are healed and your muscles have completely recovered. After your surgery is complete, Dr. Wallach will perform an evaluation and advise you on when to return to your normal activities and work.
