The risks of buccal fat removal surgery are very low. Most commonly patients will have some swelling and mild tenderness in the area. They may also have some bruising.

The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and is performed through an intraoral incision. A small incision is made and the fat is teased out and then removed, the incision in the mouth is closed with absorbable sutures.

The recovery is usually very straightforward. Patients are instructed to avoid eating food that may get caught in the sutures and are told to be careful with toothbrushing. Sutures usually dissolve.

You should expect a softer look to your lower cheek once the swelling subsides.
