If you’ve been contemplating having a breast augmentation in New York as an athlete, you may be wondering whether or not breast implants will have an impact on your activity level. Here at our practice, we have received a lot of visits from marathon runners, CrossFitter goes, swimmers about the possibility of improving the appearance and shape of their breasts via implants.

Dr. Wallach can help you identify which breast implant options are ideal for you and your active lifestyle. Of course, we’ll make sure that your implants will not in any way hinder your mobility and performance. By and large, the following factors need careful consideration and assessment on your end and need to be discussed with your Plastic Surgeon in Manhattan, Dr. Wallach.

Type of Implant

Breast implants can either be saline or silicone. The latter is recommended for women athletes as they have a more natural feel and look than their saline counterparts. In addition, silicone implants are perfect for slender women who usually have lesser amount of skin and fat tissue to support the implants.

Placement of Implant

There are certain sports that call for frequent arm raising such as golf, weight lifting, and racquet sports. These activities can increase the chances of the implant being noticed hence the need for you to choose an implant placement technique that will make the implant less noticeable. The submuscular placement (under the muscle) is ideal for such intentions. However, it should be noted that submuscular placement takes longer time for you to recover than subglandular (above the muscle) placement.

Implant Profile and Location

Implant profile refers to how far the implant could project from your body. A woman who regularly rock climbs may prefer moderate implant profile to encourage maximum mobility.

Implant Size

Choosing overly large implants may cause discomfort and affect biomechanics of the body, particularly posture. This may be a problem for swimmers and runners.

Recovery Time

During recovery, restrictions may be given, including exercise and other forms of physical activity. Thus it is best for the woman athlete to discuss her timetable for recovery during an initial consultation with Dr. Wallach.

Ultimately, there is no reason for you not to have breast implants if you’re an athlete or a fitness enthusiast. In fact, what we notice is that athletes tend to heal more quickly due to their excellent state of physical and mental health.
