Ask Your Plastic Surgeon About It
To determine whether it’s safe for you to breastfeed or not, the best way to figure it out is to ask your breast surgeon about it. Your breast surgeon is the one person who knows whether your milk ducts were damaged at the time of surgery and if he or she was able to preserve major nerves. While looking at scars post-procedure is common practice, this is not a reliable method of figuring out breastfeeding safety.
If you’re still in the planning stage, you can ask your surgeon if it’s possible to preserve your milk ducts and nerves for future breastfeeding purposes. You can also opt to work with a lactation specialist post-procedure and see whether there’s milk for the first 4 to 5 days.
