by Dr. Steven Wallach
Patients in New York City often want to know whether or not they can have a tummy tuck in conjunction with a Brazilian butt lift. Dr. Steven Wallach prefers to perform these two surgeries separately. Here, we will discuss the reasons why.
Large amount of fat will be taken
Brazilian butt lift surgery calls for extensive liposuction. This can reduce the circulation to crucial areas that a tummy tuck relies on. When performing a Brazilian butt lift, Dr. Wallach tries to harvest as much fat as he can from the lower abdomen, the upper abdomen, the waist, and other areas as needed.
Tummy tucks decrease blood supply
When Dr. Wallach performs a tummy tuck, he likes to elevate the abdominal flap widely. When he does this, the blood supply to the superiorly elevated abdominal flap changes. When liposuction takes place, it may also decrease the blood supply to the skin and soft tissue. This may put the skin flap that is being closed at risk of dying. Dr. Wallach prefers to stage a tummy tuck and Brazilian butt lift surgery to decrease the risk of complications of the tummy tuck.
The surgery positions are different
These two surgeries require two different final positions, which could compromise the outcome of one, or both of the surgeries. The patient recovers from a tummy tuck in a flexed beach chair position (on their back) or on their side, while the patient recovers from a buttock lift on their stomach.
Dr. Wallach will perform Brazilian butt lifts alone, or even with breast surgery, but does not find that doing a tummy tuck in conjunction with a Brazilian butt lift is as safe as when they are staged.
