While looking at the mirror one morning, you’ve probably spotted a few wrinkles around your eyes or you’ve most likely noticed sagging skin around your neck. While aging is certainly inevitable, certain adjustments could be made on your end to actually age gracefully and maintain a youthful look. Dr. Steven Wallach is Manhattan plastic surgeon specializing in facial rejuvenation procedures such as a New York City facelift, Botox and dermal fillers.

Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Approach

So which approach should you go to improve the appearance of your face? Should you go for a surgical procedure such as a facelift? Or should you choose a non-invasive procedure such as Botox? One procedure may work for one person and not for others. The following questions will help you decide which of the two will work best.

1. What type of results do I prefer: short-term or long term?

Surgical procedures like a facelift offer long-term benefits than their non-surgical counterparts such as Botox. The results of Botox could last between 3 to 6 months while follow-up injections may be needed every 3 to 4 months for an entire year. After a year, Botox treatment every 6 months is highly recommended. On the other hand, results with facelift could last up to 10 to 15 years and is a one-time procedure only.

2. How long do I have to recover?

If you are allowed to take time off from work, a facelift may suit you well. With a surgical procedure, you will be instructed to stay at home for a longer time to heal and recover. If you do not have the luxury to take longer vacations, you can opt to have Botox. It’s not called a “lunchtime procedure” for nothing.

3. Where are my problem areas?

A facelift is an appropriate cosmetic procedure for men and women with deep creases beneath the eyes and around the mouth. On the other hand, Botox works best for those with mild to moderate skin laxity and muscle tone loss.

4. How much am I willing to spend?

Surgical procedures are more complex and intensive than their minimally-invasive counterparts, thus the former is more expensive. However, it is important to note that you need numerous Botox treatments and the costs could add up in the long run.
