The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in which Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Wallach is an active member, just revealed their annual procedural statistics for 2013 in both the surgical and non-surgical categories. All in all, there were roughly 15.1 million cosmetic procedures done, a 3 percent increase from last year.
Breast Augmentation and Botox Remain in Their Thrones
For the cosmetic surgical procedures, the top procedure in 2012 remained to be last year’s king– breast augmentation with implants, followed by rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and face lift respectively. Of the top 5 surgical procedures, the facelift procedure had the highest increase from last year.
On the other hand, Botox remains the top non-surgical cosmetic procedure, just like in 2013. Fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion completed the top 5 in the category. Dermal fillers increased up to 13 percent in 2013 from 2012, with hyaluronic acid-based fillers as the most popular choice. This is most likely driven by the fact that hyaluronic acid is a natural occuring substance in the body.
Year of Butt Augmentation and Neck Lifts
Aside from the face, it looks like what’s behind is also getting more attention. Butt lifts via fat grafting, also known as the Brazilian butt lift, had a whopping increase of 16 percent from 2012. In addition, there were approximately 55,000 neck lifts done last year, a 6 percent increase from 2012.
Here at our New York plastic surgery practice, we have also noticed that there have been a significant increase of queries regarding buttock augmentation. Dr. Wallach performs the procedure using various techniques including use of implants and your own fat injections.
All in all, it was certainly a good year for plastic surgery. The steady growth it experienced last year is partially attributed by ASPS president Robert Murphy, MD. to new devices and products hitting the market each year, increasing options and choices for consumers.
