A recent survey revealed that breast reconstruction rates has significantly increased in the U.S, specifically with implant use. The shift from utilization of autologous tissues to implants in reconstruction techniques is attributed to increased cases of women who prefer bilateral mastectomies, even in cases of unilateral cancer.
If you just had a mastectomy and lives near in Manhattan, Dr. Steven Wallach is a Manhattan breast reconstruction surgeon who has perfected different reconstruction techniques.
The Numbers Say It All
The researchers found out that breast reconstruction procedures increased by 5 percent in 2008, from from 20.8% in 1998 to 37.8% in 2008. The aforementioned research was a cross-sectional study of 178,603 total mastectomies obtained from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from 1998 to 2008. It has been found out that 51,410 immediate reconstruction cases were performed from 178,603 mastectomies done.
Furthermore, the study found out that the use of implants in breast reconstruction has accelerated to an average of 11 percent per year since 2002.
Apart from the increase in mastectomies, head researcher Evan Matros stated that another potential contributor to the increase in breast reconstruction could have been the approval of the 1998 Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, which ensures coverage for breast reconstruction amongst patients who just had mastectomy.
Manhattan Breast Reconstruction
The objective of a Manhattan breast reconstruction is to restore the size and shape of your breast as well as rebuild the appearance of a breast mound. A breast reconstruction procedure could either be done immediately following mastectomy or at a later time. Immediate breast reconstruction has the advantage of having less surgery to be done as the tissues are not yet damaged by either scarring or radiation therapy.
