When patients are unhappy with the size of their implants, the majority would like larger implants. However, sometimes a patient who has large breast implants will desire to go down a few sizes to smaller implants. When this happens, there are certain things that need to be discussed during the consultation and exam.
Depending on the amount of reduction they desire, patients may require a breast lift along with the revision because the skin envelope may sag. This can happen due to the larger implants causing stretching of the skin. Patients may also need a capsulorrhaphy, or a tightening of the breast pocket, in order to accommodate the new, smaller implant.
These are some of the thoughts that go into providing a smaller implant for someone who wants to reduce their overall volume.
