Liposuction is a popular procedure for both men and women in New York City who want to remove excess fat and contour their bodies. This procedure is ideal for those who have stubborn areas of isolated fat that cannot be removed by diet or exercise. There are two main liposuction techniques that remove fat in its full form, rather than liquefying it. These are traditional liposuction and power-assisted liposuction. Traditional liposuction is the most popular technique used to date. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) uses cannulas that are on a powered hand piece that moves the cannulas back and forth. Here, we will discuss these two liposuction techniques.
Traditional Liposuction
During traditional liposuction, several small incisions are made near the treatment areas, and a tumescent fluid is injected. After the solution takes effect, the liposuction is performed. Blunt cannulas with holes near the cannula tip allow for the removal of fat cells without harming the sensory nerves or blood vessels in the surrounding tissue.
Advantages: With traditional liposuction, very small incisions are used. It is also unlikely to get seromas, hematomas, or skin burns.
Disadvantages: Traditional liposuction is somewhat labor intensive for the surgeon, due to the back and forth motion required.
Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)
Power-assisted liposuction, or PAL, uses cannulas that are on a gas powered or electric powered hand piece that moves the cannulas back and forth.
Advantages: There are very small incisions used with this technique. There is also less manual exertion by the surgeon, due to the hand piece which does most of the work.
Disadvantages: There may be a slightly increased risk of seroma formation with this technique.
There are many different liposuction techniques and machines available to perform liposuction today. Overall, Dr. Steven Wallach believes that it is “not the wand ( the machine), but rather the magician ( the surgeon) performing the procedure that is going to create “the magic” and hopefully give you nice results.” When looking for a surgeon to perform liposuction, make sure to find someone who is experienced. “It doesn’t matter what technology they use as long as they’re getting good results with the technology that they’re using,” Dr. Wallach says.
