Liposuction is a popular technique in New York, NY to remove excess pockets of unwanted fat on the abdomen, back, arms, thighs, and more. One procedure, tumescent liposuction, is a safe method where the least amount of blood is lost compared to other forms of liposuction. Here is what to expect during a tumescent liposuction procedure.
During this process, multiple small incisions are made to gain access for the cannulas. Dr. Steven Wallach will infuse fluid through these different access points to tumesce, or swell, the area. The fluid is made up of a Lactated Ringer’s Solution, which is a sterile solution, along with epinephrine that constricts the blood vessels to reduce blood loss. It also contains lidocaine, which is a numbing medication, so patients are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Once the fluid is infused into all the areas that are being treated, Dr. Wallach begins to perform liposuction. Liposuction is performed using various cannulas, which are tubular structures that have multiple holes in them, and vary in size and width. With these cannulas, Dr. Wallach will remove the fatty content of the areas and improve the contour of the patient’s regions of concern.
During liposuction, Dr. Wallach will perform a back and forth motion, and fat and liposuction fluid will leave the body through a tube connected to the cannula. When liposuction is complete, the small incisions are closed up with sutures, and the patient is placed in a compression garment. The clothing needs to be worn for several weeks after the procedure, and the sutures will be removed a week after surgery.
