There are several different kinds of breast implants, and women often have questions about them. One type of breast implant is form stable, this generally raises a lot of questions among patients. So what exactly are form stable implants?
Dr. Steven Wallach explains that a form stable implant is a type of silicone implant. These are also referred to as “gummy bear” implants. Gummy bear implants will maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken. They are less likely to break than traditional implants, and are teardop shaped rather than just being round. They do, as Dr. Wallach mentioned, need a slightly longer skin incision to insert. Each of the major manufacturers make form stable implants and we offer all options at our plastic surgery practice.
Dr. Wallach continues to explain that these implants were designed because people had concerns of the silicone gel leaking out of the implant capsule if the implant ruptures. A form stable implant, basically, is like Jell-O™. If you slice through it, it won’t really move around much. It will maintain its form, and that’s why it’s referred to as form stable. These implants tend to be a little firmer than the more traditional silicone implants.
