Many of Dr. Wallach’s patients dealing with large breasts who wish to undergo a breast reduction are concerned about nipple sensation. Read on to learn more about this topic, as told by Dr. Wallach.
“Patients will often come in for breast reduction asking if they will have normal nipple sensation after the procedure,” Dr. Wallach said. “I will say that, in general, the majority of patients will have normal nipple sensation.”
Initially, many patients will have decreased sensation because of swelling. Usually, within about six to eight weeks, most patients will get sensation back. However, there are patients in which it can take up to a year for sensation to return.
“In general, the studies that I have read suggest that 85% of patients will have normal sensation in one year,” Explained Dr. Wallach. “There are about 10% to 15% of patients that will have a change in sensation, either a decrease or even hypersensitivity after a year.”
Overall, the loss of sensation in the nipple area after breast reduction is an uncommon occurrence. If you are interested in learning more about breast reduction surgery in New York, contact us today to schedule your initial consultation.
