Sure it’s involved with every breath you take. Sure in cases like Jimmy Durante, the nose IS the centerpiece of the face. Truth is, for everyone, the nose is the most prominent feature of our facial appearance. It provides stability and symmetry to the face, but it needs to be proportionate to the rest of the face. A disproportionate nose can be yours through genetics (thanks Mom and Dad!), a birth defect, or can be the result of trauma or injury to the nose.
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is the cosmetic surgery where the shape and size of the nose can be changed. Sometimes a defect or damage to the nose can inhibit proper breathing. Rhinoplasty can fix this. At his plastic & reconstructive surgery practice, Dr. Steven Wallach has extensive experience performing rhinoplasty. The procedure can be handled in many different ways and to address many different aesthetic preferences. See the Rhinoplasty section on this website for a more detailed breakdown. Rhinoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the degree of complication in the procedure. Most rhinoplasty procedures require one to two hours. After surgery, you will wear a splint on your new nose to support it. This will be removed in about a week. There will be swelling and bruising around your eyes and nose, and that can last up to two weeks. For the first few days following surgery, you’ll need to keep your head elevated and relatively still. It will be several weeks before you can resume strenuous activity. If you’ve never been happy with your nose, or if you damaged at some point in your past, you can change it with rhinoplasty.
