People throughout the country have come to board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Wallach to tone and slim their thighs for a naturally ideal leg contour with minimally visible scars.
What is a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is performed on people who have concerns about excess skin and fat on their upper thighs or underneath the buttocks. Thigh lifts are a type of body contouring procedure that aim to tighten loose or excess skin in the inside, outside, and back of the thighs to achieve a smooth appearance and firmer lower body, especially in people who have experienced a significant amount of weight loss and who have lots of excess skin throughout their body.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Thigh Lift?
People are good candidates for thigh lift procedures when they have specific, measurable concerns about the appearance of their thighs. The best candidates for thigh lift or any plastic surgical treatment are those who:
- Do not smoke
- Have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure
- Are generally healthy
- Have no underlying medical conditions
- Are willing and able to spend time recovering from the treatment
Often, people who have lost a significant amount weight quickly are good candidates for body contouring procedures like a thigh lift or lower body lift. Additionally, those who have severe skin laxity in their lower body or have symptoms such as severe chafing due to excess skin and fat in the inner thighs can be good candidates as well.
Thigh Lift Procedures
A thigh lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Often the patient is placed face-down and the excess skin and excess fat is removed and closed with dissolvable stitches. The patient usually has drains and is placed in a binder or compression garment, which is worn for several weeks following the procedure.
Patients usually have discomfort in the abdominal midline where the muscle weakness was treated for about a week and a half before they feel back to normal. Strenuous activity should be avoided for up to six weeks depending on your specific surgical plan.
Lateral Thigh Lift
A lateral thigh lift is performed to treat loose frontal thigh skin that often occurs after you have lost a significant amount of weight. This area is often treated during a circumferential abdominoplasty. The incision used is often the same as used during a lower body lift. Often, a formal lateral thigh lift procedure can be performed during a lower body lift with or without the addition of liposuction.
Interestingly, because of the way the skin of the thigh adheres to the leg, pulling up on the lateral thigh spirals around toward the inner thigh, and may provide some improvement of the inner (medial) thigh as well.
Medial Thigh Lift
The medial thigh lift is performed to improve the appearance and function of the inner thigh. It can treat loose, sagging skin and excess skin as well as deeper soft tissue excess. Variations of this plastic surgery procedure approach will depend upon the severity of the laxity.
A crescent excision pattern is a common variation for thigh lift patients in New York City who have moderate laxity of the upper inner thigh. This technique does not treat the lower thigh and is the more common plastic surgery procedure performed for patients who have not had significant weight loss. The incision is usually confined to the pelvic crease and the inner buttock region.
Extended Medial Thigh Lift
This is performed in patients with severe laxity of the inner thigh that extends toward the knee. This is more commonly performed in patients with massive weight loss. An L-shaped incision pattern is used along with a groin crease incision as well as a longitudinal incision down the inner thigh toward the knee.
During your procedure, Dr. Wallach ensures the natural removal of excess skin and soft tissue through these incisions, with the resulting scar appearing like the inseam of a pair of pants.
Results and Recovery from Thigh Lift Surgery
Your thigh lift results will be life-long, and you can enjoy your new contours as long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, following a nutritious diet and exercise regimen. Even though you will be able to see your body contouring results immediately, the final individual results may vary and will be visible in about 1 year. With removal of the excess and loose skin, you can enjoy a slimmer silhouette and smooth skin throughout the thigh region that was treated.
